I walked the old road yesterday
Stumbled blind and recklessly
Circled back and started to unwind
I wrote a note, an epitaph
On a faded yellow photograph
A picture of myself I left behind

But dreams of things that might have been
Assail me in my troubled sleep
And seep into the darkness of my mind
It’s a fine line

I carried burdens on my back
Until I thought the world would crack
I faltered when I reached the finish line
I drove a wedge between us
Even though I didn’t mean it
I built a wall that no one else could climb

But all the bridges that I burned
And all the lessons that I’ve learned
Comeback to serve me will from time to time
It’s a fine line

Just one step at a time, perfect balance on the wire

I’ve worn the robes of royalty
A straight jacket for a king
I’ve led the way and I’ve followed with the blind
But now I’ll walk another way
Stop me if I start to stray
Catch me if I fall into a bind

Just one step at a time, perfect balance on the wire
